Contribution to peer to peer constellation in broadcasting enviroments

Abstract

Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή συμβάλλει στην αποδοτική αξιοποίηση των δικτυακών πόρων σε διαδραστικά περιβάλλοντα ευρυ-εκπομπής, μελετώντας, σχεδιάζοντας και εφαρμόζοντας σε αυτά, ένα νέο μηχανισμό διανομής διομότιμων υπηρεσιών.Αξιοποιώντας τις πρόσφατες εξελίξεις στην επίγεια ψηφιακή μετάδοση, η διατριβή αρχικά αναλύει την δικτυακή απόδοση ενός συστήματος επίγειας διαδραστικής Τηλεόρασης(DVB-T), το οποίο παρέχει IP υπηρεσίες σύμφωνα με το μοντέλο πελάτη/διακομιστή, εντοπίζοντας προβλήματα δικτυακής συμφόρησης στο κανάλι καθόδου τα οποία οδηγούσαν στη μειωμένη δικτυακή απόδοση του συστήματος.Προκειμένου να αντιμετωπιστεί η δικτυακή συμφόρηση, μελετηθήκαν τεχνικές δυναμικής διαχείρισης του εύρους ζώνης (σε επίπεδο δικτύου) στο κανάλι DVB-T, καταλήγοντας στην υιοθέτηση μηχανισμών διαφοροποιημένων υπηρεσιών (DiffServ). Η ανάλυση των πειραματικών αποτελεσμάτων της προτεινόμενης DiffServ αρχιτεκτονικής παρόλο που βελτίωσε την δικτυακή απόδοση ανέδειξε και σημεία που μπορεί να υπάρξει περαιτέρω βελτίωση. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, παρατηρήθηκε ότι ενώ το κανάλι καθόδου του DVB-T μπορεί πολύ εύκολα να κορεστεί κατά την μεταφορά περιεχομένου μεταξύ των CMN, άλλα τμήματα του δικτύου υπό-χρησιμοποιούνται ή παραμένουν εντελώς ανεκμετάλλευτα.Προς την κατεύθυνση μιας πιο ισορροπημένης εκμετάλλευσης των δικτυακών πόρων σε όλα τα τμήματα του δικτύου, η διατριβή ασχολήθηκε με την εφαρμογή διομότιμων τεχνολογιών, στο σύστημα ψηφιακής τηλεόρασης, οι οποίες όχι μόνο αυξήσαν τη χρήση των ανεκμετάλλευτων δικτυακών πόρων σε όλα τα τμήματα του DVB-T δικτύου αλλά και οδήγησαν στην 70% αύξηση του λόγου των μεταδιδόμενων υπηρεσιών προς το διαθέσιμο εύρος ζώνης του DVB-T καναλιού (σε σχέση πάντα με τους ταυτόχρονα διασυνδεδεμένους κόμβους). Μολονότι, την εμφανή βελτίωση που επέφερε η χρησιμοποίηση διομότιμων μηχανισμών παρατηρήθηκε το εξής φαινόμενο: πανομοιότυπα κομμάτια περιεχομένου περνούσαν παραπάνω από μια φορά από το DVB-T κανάλι καθόδου ενώ—παίρνοντας υπόψη ότι σε ένα περιβάλλον ευρύ-εκπομπής όλοι οι χρήστες λαμβάνουν τα ιδιά δεδομένα μεσώ του καναλιού καθόδου—αποδοτικότερο θα ήταν να περνούσαν μόνο μία φορά και να μην επαναδεσμεύουν το διαθέσιμο εύρος ζώνης.Προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση, η διατριβή σχεδίασε, υλοποίησε και αξιολόγησε έναν πρότυπο μηχανισμό ανίχνευσης P2P περιεχομένου σε δίκτυα ευρείας κάλυψης, που επιτρέπει την δραστική μείωση του αριθμού επαναεκπομπών πανομοιότυπων κομμάτια περιεχομένου από το DVB-T κανάλι. Τα πειραματικά αποτελέσματα έδειξαν 69% μείωση της κίνησης στο κανάλι DVB-T, αποδεικνύοντας την αποδοτικότητα του μηχανισμού.

This Ph.D. thesis contributes to the issue of efficient resource exploitation in interactive broadcasting environments by studying, designing, and implementing a novel P2P delivery mechanism that allows users to share, deliver and consume content distributed in the network, with maximum possible QoS. Building upon the recent advances in digital terrestrial video broadcasting (DVB-T), the thesis initially discusses the overall architecture of an interactive DVB/IP infrastructure in decentralised configuration, where the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) stream acts as the downlink of a backbone segment that interconnects intermediate nodes (Cell Main Nodes – CMNs), while uplink data are delivered over point-to-point channels. Users access this backbone segment via the corresponding CMN, by utilising wired and/or wireless point-to-multipoint links (access segment). Following a number of experimental evaluation tests in actual transmission/reception conditions, the thesis elaborates on the overall system’s performance during IP services provision under the Client/Server model following best-effort scheme, and identifies architectural design issues for guaranteed QoS provision. Towards this, it studies bandwidth management techniques (at the Network layer) for dynamically adapting/allocating the available backbone resources (i.e. in the DVB-T stream) according to the QoS requirements of each service, and proposes the implementation of DiffServ policies for guaranteed QoS provision. Analysis of experimental results has verified the validity of proposed DiffServ implementation, besides revealing the system’s capacity in terms of efficient resource exploitation. More specifically, it was observed that while the DVB-T downlink (backbone segment) is easily saturated during inter-CMN content delivery (a matter of course of the number of concurrent users and services’ bandwidth requirements), other network segments (such as the access and/or the uplinks from the CMNs) remain underutilised or even totally unexploited. In order to obtain more balanced resource exploitation among all network segments, the thesis discusses the realisation of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) constellations for alleviating the load burden in the DVB-T downlink and “shifting” traffic to the underutilised channels. In this respect, the thesis elaborates on the implementation of a hybrid DVB/IP/P2P infrastructure, where content distribution is achieved over the BitTorrent protocol. In this way, peers of the same CMN may exchange their content “chunks” locally (intra-CMN communication) over the corresponding access network, and not via the DVB-T link. Performance evaluation tests indicated that such P2P constellations may “transpose” more than 50% of the DVB-T load to the access segments (a matter of the number of CMNs and their concurrent peers), thus raising system’s scalability and providing an overall service/bandwidth gain higher than 70%, when compared to the typical Client/Server model. However, a significant number of identical content chunks were still crossing the DVB-T stream as many times as the number of unicast BitTorrent connections during inter-CMN communication. More specifically, those chunks were stemming by a peer in a specific CMN and targeting others in different CMNs, thus loading the DVB-T link with redundant traffic. Removing this redundancy may raise system’s scalability and enhance its performance. Towards these, the thesis discusses the realisation of a prototype mechanism that is able to minimise those identical chunks, optimise the resource utilisation and maximise the overall system’s scalability. Taking into account the broadcasting nature of the DVB-T stream, the thesis elaborates on a prototype broadcast-aware P2P mechanism (namely BAP2P) allowing identical content chunks being available “on the air” (DVB-T link) to be simultaneously received by all CMNs participating in the overlay. In this way, each CMN functions as a Broadcast-Aware node, capable to process the DVB-T stream, extract from it any useful chunks belonging to the torrent, and proactively store them locally prior to peer’s request. Whenever peers demand for those chunks, the BAP2P mechanism serves them locally, over the corresponding access segment. Performance evaluation experiments verified the validity of the proposed mechanism for optimised resource exploitation and maximum-possible scalable operation, besides revealing topics for future research. More specifically, it was experimentally verified that torrents might traverse the DVB-T link maximum 1.2 times, no matter the number of concurrent peers, thus eliminating the load burden in the backbone segment, optimising the available resources’ utilisation and therefore maximising system’s scalability. On the other hand, since process of the available “on the air”, data may raise privacy and security issues, the use of a data-protection mechanisms/protocols is imperative. Towards this direction, the thesis identifies possible solutions, among which are the IPSec for data encryption and the IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for better management of the provided services, and elaborates on their exploitation over the proposed DVB/IP/P2P infrastructure with the Broadcast-Aware mechanism.
