Η Εβραϊκή Κοινότητα της Θεσσαλονίκης - Πτυχές Αντισημιτικού Λόγου στην Εφημερίδα Μακεδονία (1921-1931)

Abstract

Με την ενσωμάτωση της Θεσσαλονίκης στο ελληνικό κράτος το 1912, επέρχεται μια σειρά από σημαντικές αλλαγές που επηρεάζουν τη ζωή της εβραϊκής κοινότητας της πόλης αλλά και τις διακοινοτικές σχέσεις. Η προσπάθεια του κράτους να εντάξει το μικτό πληθυσμό της Θεσσαλονίκης σε ένα ενιαίο εθνικό σώμα, έχει σαν αποτέλεσμα την παραγωγή ενός εθνικού σχεδίου που απαιτεί από τους Εβραίους να αφομοιωθούν. Η αποτυχία της αφομοίωσης αυτής παράγει μια συγκεκριμένη μορφή αντισημιτικού λόγου, την οποία ανιχνεύουμε στην αρθρογραφία της Μακεδονίας. Στην εργασία αυτή μελετούμε πτυχές αυτού του λόγου στα άρθρα της εφημερίδας της περιόδου 1921-1931, η οποία καταλήγει στην πυρπόληση του συνοικισμού Κάμπελ, μια κορυφαία στιγμή στο συνεχές αντισημιτικού λόγου και πρακτικών που χαρακτηρίζουν όλη την προηγούμενη χρονική περίοδο μελέτης. Χρησιμοποιώντας σύγχρονες ερευνητικές κατευθύνσεις σχετικά με την επιλογή και ανάλυση της ειδησεογραφίας και αρθρογραφίας του Τύπου και τη σχέση τους με το ρατσιστικό λόγο, εκθέτουμε τα ευρήματά μας μαζί με μια ταυτόχρονη παρουσίαση του ιστορικού πλαισίου της εποχής. Τα εξέχοντα γεγονότα αυτής της περιόδου, από την κατάληψη της πόλης από τα ελληνικά στρατεύματα, μέχρι και τα γεγονότα του Κάμπελ αποτελούν τις βασικές θεματικές ενότητες της εργασίας: η μεγάλη πυρκαγιά του 1917 και η ανοικοδόμηση της πόλης, οι εκλογικές αναμετρήσεις με φόντο τις πολιτικές αντιπαραθέσεις της εποχής, οι εδαφικές αντιπαραθέσεις και η σύγκρουση των γειτονικών εθνικισμών, η Μικρασιατική καταστροφή και η προσέλευση των προσφύγων της ανατολής, η άνοδος του εγχώριου εθνικισμού κ.α. Μέσα από τη μελέτη, αναδεικνύεται ο βασικός άξονας του αντισημιτικού λόγου της Μακεδονίας, ο οποίος είναι οργανωμένος γύρω από την ιδέα ότι οι Εβραίοι είναι ξένοι ως προς το εθνικό σώμα της Ελλάδας, αρνούνται να αφομοιωθούν, εκφράζουν αντεθνική στάση και εντέλει προδοτική συμπεριφορά. Σε συνδυασμό με τον παραπάνω άξονα ανιχνεύουμε ψήγματα λαϊκού αντισημιτισμού που τροφοδοτούν την ιδέα αυτή και κάνουν ικανή την διάδραση της εφημερίδας με το αναγνωστικό κοινό και με τον ελληνικό πληθυσμό της πόλης. Η εργασία θα ακολουθήσει αυτή την αμφίδρομη σχέση μέχρι τις απώτερες συνέπειες της, δηλαδή τα γεγονότα του Κάμπελ, για τα οποία ο αντισημιτικός λόγος της εφημερίδας παίζει κεντρικό ρόλο.

Following the annexation of the city of Salonika to the Greek state in 1912, a series of important changes that affect the life of the Jewish community of the city and the intercommunal relations takes place. The state’s effort to integrate the mixed population of Salonika into a unified national body, results in the production of a national scheme which demands that the Jews be incorporated. The failure of this incorporation generates a specific form of antisemitic discourse, which we trace in the articles of the Makedonia newspaper. In this paper we study certain aspects of this discourse in the articles of this newspaper during the period 1921-1931, which concludes with the setting ablaze of the Jewish quarter of Campbell, a peek moment of the antisemitic discourse and practices continuum that characterize the preceding period of our research. Using modern research directions regarding the selection and analysis of the articles of the Press and their relation to racist discourse, we display our findings together with a presentation of the historical context of that time. The prominent events of this period, starting from the occupation of the city by the Greek army until the calamities of the Campbell quarter, constitute the basic thematic units of the paper: the great fire of 1917 and the reconstruction of the city, the elections against the political conflicts background of the time, the territorial disputes and the conflicts between the neighbouring nationalisms, the Asia Minor catastrophe and the influx of refugees from the East, the rise of domestic nationalism etc. The paper highlights the basic axis of the antisemitic discourse of Makedonia, which is structured around the idea that the Jews are alien to the national Greek body, they deny assimilation, they express an anti-national attitude and eventually that they are traitors. In combination with the aforementioned axis we find traces of popular antisemitism that fuel this idea and make possible the interaction between the newspaper and its readers as well as the city’s Greek population. The paper will follow this bidirectional relation up to its endmost consequences, namely the incidents of the Campbell quarter, to which the antiisemitic discourse of the newspaper plays a key role.
