Environmental education and resilient societies: the case study of forest fires in Greece

Abstract

Οι δασικές πυρκαγιές, όπως όλες οι φυσικές καταστροφές,εχουν τη δυναμική να επηρεάζουν άμεσα τόσο το περιβάλλον όσο και την κοινωνική δομή των τοπικών κοινοτήτων. Αντίθετα με μερικές φυσικές καταστροφές, χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα των οποίων αποτελούν οι τυφώνες, οι ανεμοστρόβιλοι και τα τσουνάμι που δεν μπορούν να προβλεφθούν, το φαινόμενο των δασικών πυρκαγιών μπορεί εύκολα να προβλεφθεί και να ελεγχθεί εφόσον οι αιτίες του είναι κυρίως ανθρωπογενείς. Το άρθρο αυτό, εστιάζοντας στο παράδειγμα των δασικών πυρκαγιών που έπληξαν την Ελλάδα κατά το καλοκαίρι του 2007, ασχολείται με τον εξέχοντα ρόλο που διαδραματίζει η περιβαλλοντική εκπαίδευση στη διαδικασία προώθησης κοινωνιών ανεκτικών στον φυσικό κίνδυνο. Με δεδομένο ότι οι συγκεκριμένες δασικές πυρκαγιές είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα ένα ασυνήθιστα υψηλό ποσοστό θανάτων, το συγκεκριμένο άρθρο επιχειρηματολογεί υπέρ της ανάγκης ύπαρξης και εφαρμογής επιτυχημένων προγραμμάτων περιβαλλοντικής εκπαίδευσης με σκοπό να αποφευχθούν παρόμοιες τραγωδίες στο μέλλον.

Forest fires, as all natural disasters, have the potential to seriously affect both the environment and the social structure of a local community. Unlike some of the natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornados and tsunamis which are unpredictable, the phenomenon of forest fires could be easily predicted and controlled, since the causes are mainly anthropogenic. This article, focusing on the paradigm of forest fires that occurred in Greece during the summer of 2007, deals in depth with the significant role that Environmental Education plays in the promotion of resilient societies. Given the fact, that the specific forest fires resulted in an unusually high death toll, the article argues about the need for successful environmental education for resilience in order to avoid similar tragedies. Increasing the social tolerance to natural hazards and directing communities’ efforts towards strengthening sustainable development in their area should become common practices everywhere.
