This Master’s Thesis was written along with the conclusion of the study cycle of the University of the Aegean Postgraduate Program “Ecological Engineering and Climate Change”. This Thesis, titled “3D Presentation of Light Intensity for Lighting Columns’ Surrounding Space with the help of mathematic models and GIS”, is used for the first time with GIS and its purpose is to develop a color-based methodology to calculate the light intensity of a spot around a lighting column, which will help to correctly place the light columns for the best street lighting. Purpose and expected results of this thesis: The coordinates and the lighting geometric characteristics of the light columns will be inserted in a GIS. 3D spatial calculations will be conducted to: • Evaluate the light intensity of every spot around the column • Find effective techniques for displaying the information in 3D The expected result is a GIS file that will be able to calculate and display the 3D spatial characteristics of the urban lighting’s intensity, based on geometric properties of lamps and columns. The study place was selected to be Mitilini’s jetty. Calculations were conducted around 3 lighting columns. The calculation results were similar to the values of the columns. Knowing each column’s angles and its azimuth corner according to GIS report system along with using mathematic formulas, we are able to calculate for every surrounding space point the vertical angle γ (incidence angle) and the horizontal angle C according to every lighting column, resulting in the total light intensity value of every point. Using suitable methodology for the first time in GIS, we will have the chromatic display of these values. That way we will have an optical image of the surrounding environment’s lighting quality, the ability to choose the best lamp and column to achieve the best performance and minimum energy consumption, contributing to protecting the environment.el_GR
