Digital twins have become increasingly important in recent years due to advancements in technologies such as IoT, data analytics, AI and data visu alization. These advancements have enabled the growth of digital twins in both the scientific community and the private sector, with significant invest ments being made in this technology. As a result, digital twins have become an essential tool for improving efficiency, optimizing processes, and making data driven decisions in various industries. However, digital twins have to overcome certain challenges in various sectors such as data integration & management, performing informative and correct real-time updates, meet scalability and in teroperability criteria, handle security and privacy concerns as well as respond to increasing costs to fully realize their potential. In this paper definitions such as digital model, digital shadow and digital twin are presented along with their use cases from within the industry and research projects. Additionally, enabling technologies for digital twins and semantic twins are discussed. More focus has been given to the Cultural Heritage field as this technology can help transform the field and elevate it to the next level. Finally, two cases studies of digital twins are presented.en_US
